A favorite snack among my brothers and sisters when we were growing up. There was rarely a night that went by when Mom didn't have some kind of homemade 'snack' for us to eat around 7 PM, as we were all hungry around that time--Probably because we always had supper between 3:30-4:30 when Dad got home from work.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 - egg
  • 1/2 cup dark karo syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder (e.g., folgers instant)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • ICING
  • 1 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla frosting
  • 1-2 tablespoon milk
  • pinch - salt

How To Make molasses cremes

  • Step 1
    Cream shortening & sugar.
  • Step 2
    Add egg; beat well.
  • Step 3
    Mix in Karo & 1/2 c. water.
  • Step 4
    Sift together (yeah, right) remaining ingredients & stir into creamed mixture.
  • Step 5
    Pour into greased 13x9 pan & bake for approximately 30 minutes. While warm, frost. Cool, & cut into 24 squares.
  • Step 6
    While cake is still warm, Add milk to confectioners' sugar until it reaches spreading consistency. Add dash of salt & vanilla.
