I babysat for the Hood's while in highschool. While this is called a cake, it's more of a coffee cake, can be eaten anytime of day....it's great warm or cold, with or without ice cream or whipped cream. It's a great fall cake.

I will often make this to take into a family that has suffered a loss.


You can cut the recipe in 1/2 to make an 8x8 pan.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 2
    eggs
  • 3 c
    raw, peeled, chopped apples
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 3/4 c
    chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract (1/2 tsp for 8x8 pan)
  • TOPPING

  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    chopped walnuts (i use more)
  • 1 dash(es)
    cinnamon

How to Make Glenda Hood's German Apple Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350*; Prepare 9x13 baking dish (spray with Pam or Oven Magic)
  2. Cream sugar vanilla & butter. Add eggs and apples
  3. In a separate bowl combine dry ingredients:flour, cinnamon, salt and soda. Add to vanilla, butter, egg and vanilla mixture. Put into prepared baking dish
  4. In a separate small bowl combing topping ingredients of sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and walnuts. Stir to combine and sprinkle evenly over the top of cake batter. Bake
