This recipe comes from my hubby's family. I had not been able to find a gingerbread recipe I liked until I made this. It is SO GOOD! Hubby's grandmother used to make this in a shallow pan. I make it in a glass pan and it comes out more cake like, which I LOVE! If you like gingerbread, I know you're going to love this too! Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 - egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup hot water

How To Make gingerbread

  • Step 1
Cream shortening and sugar together. Add beaten egg and molasses and mix well. Mix dry ingredients together in a seperate bowl. Add to creamed mixture and mix well. Add hot water and mix until smooth. Bake in a greased and floured pan at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes. Note: You can use a shallow baking pan or a glass baking dish. If you prefer a more cake-like result, use a glass baking dish. I use a square glass dish or the smaller size of my rectangular glass dishes. If cooking in a glass dish, you may have to cook it a little longer.
