Ingredients

  • 4 oz
    baker's german sweet chocolate squares
  • 1/2 c
    boiling water
  • 1 c
    butter
  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 4 large
    egg yolks
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c
    flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 c
    buttermilk
  • 4 large
    egg whites, stiffly beaten
  • 1 c
    eagle milk
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 3 large
    egg yolks
  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1 1/3 c
    coconut
  • 1 c
    chopped pecans

How to Make German Chocolate Cake, Mom's

Step-by-Step

  1. Melt chocolate, cool. Cream butter and sugar, add egg yolks one at a time, beat well. Add chocolate and vanilla. Sift flour, soda and salt and add alternately with buttermilk. Beat until smooth. Fold in egg whites and pour into 3 deep 9" round layer cake pans lined with wax paper on the bottom. Bake at 350 degrees 30-40 min. Cool. Frost tops only and layer.
  2. Frosting:
    Cook together 1 c eagle milk, 1 c sugar, 3 egg yolks, 1/2 c butter and 1 t vanilla to thicken over med heat, about 12 min. Add coconut and nuts.
