This is absolutely amazing. If I can't have cheesecake for my birthday, I want this cake!

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces baker's german sweet chocolate squares
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 large egg whites, stiffly beaten
  • 1 cup eagle milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/3 cups coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

How To Make german chocolate cake, mom's

  • Step 1
    Melt chocolate, cool. Cream butter and sugar, add egg yolks one at a time, beat well. Add chocolate and vanilla. Sift flour, soda and salt and add alternately with buttermilk. Beat until smooth. Fold in egg whites and pour into 3 deep 9" round layer cake pans lined with wax paper on the bottom. Bake at 350 degrees 30-40 min. Cool. Frost tops only and layer.
  • Step 2
    Frosting: Cook together 1 c eagle milk, 1 c sugar, 3 egg yolks, 1/2 c butter and 1 t vanilla to thicken over med heat, about 12 min. Add coconut and nuts.
