I got this recipe from a friend back in the 1960's.

Ingredients

  • 1 c
    white sugar
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 1/2 c
    applesauce
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda, mix into applesauce
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    allspice, ground
  • 1 c
    nuts, i use pecans and filberts
  • 1 c
    dates, slightly chopped
  • 1 c
    maraschino cherries, slightly chopped

How to Make Fruit Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. mix together sugar, shortening, egg, applesauce (with baking soda added), and vanilla.
  3. mix together, flour, salt, cloves, cinnamon and allspice.
  4. Add nuts, dates and cherries, mix.
  5. Bake at 350 for one hour.
