This was my mothers recipe and a favorite of our family. My children, nieces, and nephews still use this recipe today. It has always been a family reunion favorite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 - egg
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon clove, ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

How To Make chocolate soda cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    Blend sugar and shortening in large mixing bowl.
  • Step 3
    add eggs, milk, and vanilla. mix well
  • Step 4
    In another bowl mix flour, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and soda.
  • Step 5
    Add wet mixture to dry mixture.
  • Step 6
    Dissolve soda and cocoa into water then add to mixture.
  • Step 7
    Add raisins and nuts
  • Step 8
    Grease and flour 9 by 13 cake pan.
  • Step 9
    Pour batter into cake pan. Tap bottom of cake pan gently on counter to release excess bubbles.
  • Step 10
    Bake on 350 degrees for 45 minutes
