I created this new layer cake recipe with chocolate malt balls in the cake and an edible brownie batter frosting.

Ingredients

  • CAKE
  • 2 cups crushed chocolate malt balls, divided
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons malted milk powder
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • BROWNIE BATTER FROSTING
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 6 tablespoons fudge brownie mix
  • 1/2 cup chocolate syrup
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

How To Make chocolate malted cake with brownie batter frosting

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking spray. Add 1 cup crushed chocolate malted balls into each pan.
  • Step 2
    In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, water, oil, egg whites and malted milk powder. Beat well with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in dark chocolate chips.
  • Step 3
    Pour the cake batter into the cake pans evenly. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted the center comes out clean.
  • Step 4
    Remove from the oven and cool the cakes in pans on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Remove the cakes from pans and cool completely on wire rack.
  • Step 5
    In a medium bowl, combine heavy cream, half and half, cream cheese, brownie mix, chocolate syrup and sugar; whisk well for 5 minutes until blended and smooth. Set aside.
  • Step 6
    Place bottom cake layer on serving plate. Spread the frosting onto the cake about 1/8-inch thick. Add 1/2 cup crushed chocolate malted balls.
  • Step 7
    Place top cake layer on top. Spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle with remaining crushed chocolate malted balls on top.
