chocolate cake 1943
This recipe was given to my mother by her friend Mabel Goff in 1943. I was not born until 1949, so I don't know Mrs. Goff, but I think my folks were living in Cleveland, Ohio at the time. Again, I don't know if I ever tasted this one, but my mother took the time to write it in her note book so she must have liked it. Mom often wrote her recipes in an abbreviated style because she was taking notes as someone else talked. She also tried to write two recipes per page so did not waste space with "understood" directions.

Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 - whole eggs
- 2 - chocolate, unsweetened squares, melted
- 1 2/3 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup nuts (walnuts or pecans)
How To Make chocolate cake 1943

Step 1cream the butter and the sugar

Step 2add the egg and beat until combined

Step 3add the melted chocolate

Step 4alternately add flour and milk, mixing between additions until all has been incorporated

Step 5add the nuts and vanilla and stir

Step 6Place in square or round cake pan bake at 350 until done
