Aunt Jan's Chocolate Pound Cake

This is my Great Aunt Jan's recipe and it has been in the family for years. She passed it on to me and I have been making it for years now. It is just the best pound cake I've ever had and it is a special request at all family functions.

make sure that all butter, shortening and cream cheese are soft for easiest mixing, I set mine out the day before I make my cake.

grease your tube pan and dust it with cocoa instead of flour.

    butter, unsalted
  • 1/2 c
    shortening, butter flavor
  • 3 c

    cake flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp
  • 1/2 c
    cocoa, unsweetened
  • 1 1/4 c
  • 1 tsp

  • 2 pkg
    cream cheese
  • 2 stick
  • 16 oz
    confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tsp

How to Make Aunt Jan's Chocolate Pound Cake


  1. preheat oven to 325
  2. cream butter, shortening and sugar and then mix in eggs one at a time.
  3. sift flour. baking powder, cocoa, and salt
  4. mix buttermilk and vanilla together
  5. alternate between adding wet and dry ingredients until all mixed together
  6. Pour batter into a greased tube pan that has been dusted with cocoa powder and bake for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Let cake cool completely and then frost with cream cheese frosting.
  7. For cream cheese frosting mix softened cream cheese and butter with confectioners sugar and vanilla until smooth and creamy.
