My mom use to make this recipe as I was a child, she said her father made this ... This is made in a 9 x 9 inch pan

Ingredients

  • 2 cups "unsifted" all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed firmly
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups "hot" applesauce
  • 1 cup dates, chopped
  • 3/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

How To Make applesauce - date cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven: 350 degrees. Grease & flour a 9 x 9 inch pan; set aside.
  • Step 2
    In large bowl: mix flour with baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, & cloves. Add eggs, brown sugar, soft butter & 1 cup of "HOT" applesauce; beat at low speed just until ingredients are combined. Beat again for 2 more minutes at medium speed.
  • Step 3
    Add remaining 1 cup "HOT" applesauce, dates,& nuts; beat for 1 minute. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 50 minutes. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes; then remove & cool on wire rack.
