This morning dish is guaranteed to stick to your ribs and warm you up. If you need to make this dish "macho" for your outdoor sportsmen, fry sausage and crumble into the grits for a hearty one-dish breakfast.

  • FOR FRUIT COMPOTE:

    fresh blackberries
  • 1/2 c
    fresh strawberries, sliced

How To Make grits & hot fruit

  • 1
Prepare grits according to package directions. Note that stone ground grits are NOT the same as quick cook versions. They take longer to cook, but are creamy and flavorful. Two of my favorite brands are: (1) Delta Grind - www.deltagrind.com; and (2) The Grit Girl - www.gritgirl.net.
  • 2
Place berries (substitute your favorites if you like), sugar and orange juice in a saucepan and bring mixture to a simmer.
  • 3
Stir until the berries release their juices and are reduced to a syrupy consistency.
  • 4
Pour grits into a bowl and top with hot fruit compote.
