This is my Mom's recipe and I just love it. Anything with dates is good. This is an old recipe. I can't remember when Mom didn't make it. The recipe has been around a long time.My parents were married almost 70 years, and she made it all through their marriage.

Ingredients

  • 1 c
    dates-cut up
  • 1 1/2 c
    boiling water
  • COMBINE AND LET STAND UNTIL NEEDED

  • 1 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 1 large
    egg
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 3/4 c
    flour
  • 1 c
    nutmeats (i like pecans but walnuts are good too}
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • ·
    pinch salt

How to Make Nonnies Date Nut Bread

Step-by-Step

  1. Cream sugar and shorting.
    Add egg.
    Mix soda with flour and add 1 teaspoon vanilla.
    Add flour alternately with liquid from dates.
    Add dates & nuts.
  2. Bake 1 hour at 350 in a greased and floured loaf pan.
    Cool in pan for 5 minutes and cool on a wire rack.
