This recipe has been posted here for play in Culinary Quest - Ireland. My mothers father was Irish, I am lucky to have sampled many Irish breads growing up. This is not my grandfathers recipe but it is good. Truly, one of my personal favorite Irish breads .... hope you will enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 4 ounces light brown sugar
  • 2 ounces candied citron chopped
  • 6 ounces raisins, plain or golden
  • 4 ounces soft butter
  • 6 ounces golden syrup
  • 1 large beaten egg
  • 4 tablespoons milk

How To Make irish spice bread - aran spiosrai

  • Step 1
    Sift the flour with the soda and baking powder, and the mixed spice and ginger.
  • Step 2
    Add the brown sugar, chopped peel and raisins and mix.
  • Step 3
    Make a well in the center.
  • Step 4
    Melt the butter with the syrup over low heat, then pour into the well in the mixture.
  • Step 5
    Add the beaten egg and milk and mix very well.
  • Step 6
    Pour into a greased 2-lb loaf pan and bake in a preheated oven at 325 F for 40-50 minutes, or until it tests done.
