Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 - eggs
- 1/3 cup molasses
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice, ground
- 3/4 cup diluted evaporated milk*
- - whipped cream (optional)
- - nuts (optional)
How To Make grandmother's gingerbread

Step 1Cream sugar and vegetable shortening. Add beaten eggs and molasses.

Step 2Sift flour, baking powder,salt, soda, and spices. Add these alternately with the diluted* (half milk and half water) evaporated milk.

Step 3Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes in a 8" or 9" square pan, which has been greased and floured. Serve with whipped cream and/or chopped nuts, if desired.
