Ingredients

1/2 c
sugar
1/2 c
vegetable shortening
2
eggs
1/3 c
molasses
2 c
all purpose flour
2 tsp
baking powder
1 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
soda
1/2 tsp
ginger
1/2 tsp
cloves
1/2 tsp
allspice, ground
3/4 c
diluted evaporated milk*
whipped cream (optional)
nuts (optional)

How to Make Grandmother's Gingerbread

Step-by-Step

  • 1Cream sugar and vegetable shortening. Add beaten eggs and molasses.
  • 2Sift flour, baking powder,salt, soda, and spices. Add these alternately with the diluted* (half milk and half water) evaporated milk.
  • 3Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes in a 8" or 9" square pan, which has been greased and floured. Serve with whipped cream and/or chopped nuts, if desired.
