  • 1/2 c
  • 1/2 c
    vegetable shortening
  • 2
  • 1/3 c
  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
    allspice, ground
  • 3/4 c
    diluted evaporated milk*
  • ·
    whipped cream (optional)
  • ·
    nuts (optional)

How to Make Grandmother's Gingerbread


  1. Cream sugar and vegetable shortening. Add beaten eggs and molasses.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder,salt, soda, and spices. Add these alternately with the diluted* (half milk and half water) evaporated milk.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes in a 8" or 9" square pan, which has been greased and floured. Serve with whipped cream and/or chopped nuts, if desired.
