When I was a child, my grandmother and also my mother would cook this for our family, and we loved it!! Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice, ground
  • 3/4 cup diluted evaporated milk*
  • - whipped cream (optional)
  • - nuts (optional)

How To Make grandmother's gingerbread

  • Step 1
    Cream sugar and vegetable shortening. Add beaten eggs and molasses.
  • Step 2
    Sift flour, baking powder,salt, soda, and spices. Add these alternately with the diluted* (half milk and half water) evaporated milk.
  • Step 3
    Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes in a 8" or 9" square pan, which has been greased and floured. Serve with whipped cream and/or chopped nuts, if desired.
