homemade garlic bread

this is so good sliced and served with lasagna or spaghetti. good sliced as it is, or sliced and toasted in the oven with butter. this bread is slightly sweet, from the oregano and sugar, but savory from the garlic. the smell while baking is deliscious.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1 tablespoon dry oregano
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 tablespoons corn meal ( to bake on )
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons jarred minced garlic ( with juice)

How To Make homemade garlic bread

  • Step 1
    in large bowl mix together yeast, sugar and warm water. dissolve yeast and let sit 5 minutes
  • Step 2
    add garlic salt and oregano, let sit another minute
  • Step 3
    stir in shortening, garlic and it's juice
  • Step 4
    stir in flour one cup at a time. when fourth cup is being mixed in, start kneading. knead it in for at least 3 minutes.
  • Step 5
    turn dough into a greased bowl cover with tea towel and let rise 1 hour
  • Step 6
    put dough out on a lightly floured surface and divide in half. roll each out into large rectangle. roll up pinching to seal.
  • Step 7
    sprinkle corn meal onto large baking sheet. lay each loaf on it.do not grease pan. make small diaginal slits on top of each. cover with tea towel and let rise 1 1/2 hours.
  • Step 8
    bake in a 400 degree oven 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown and sound hollow.
