Do NOT use cornmeal mix as it has flour in it. Sometimes I mix in crumbled bacon and cheddar cheese before pouring into skillet.

bacon drippings

How to Make Granny's Spoonbread


  • 1Turn oven on to 375 degrees. Brush 8 - 10 inch cast iron skillet with alittle of the bacon grease (drippings)and put skillet into oven so it can preheat.
  • 2Meanwhile, in med. pot, add water, salt, and cornmeal and bring to boil.Cook 5 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat.
  • 3In medium bowl beat eggs, add milk and bacon grease and mix. Add this slowly to cornmeal mixture mixing well. ( this is when you can add cheese and crumbled bacon if desired) Pour into the preheated skillet and bake 45 - 50 minutes. Serve hot, with lots of butter!
