easy white bread or rolls
This is a soft, slightly sweet yeast bread that bakes up tender with a light, fluffy texture and a golden crust. Enriched with eggs and a bit of fat, it sits somewhere between classic sandwich bread and a dinner roll dough—perfect for slicing, pulling apart warm, or shaping into rolls. It’s a practical, reliable recipe that turns simple pantry ingredients into comforting, homemade bread. This recipe brings me back to those early days of learning how to cook and bake, making do, and the kindness of being shown something I’d use for life.

Ingredients
- 2 large eggs
- hot tap water
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 packages yeast
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup lard, melted (or oil)
- 3-4 cups all-purpose flour
How To Make easy white bread or rolls
-
Step 1Mix wet ingredients. In a 2-cup measuring cup, beat the eggs, then add hot tap water until you reach 2 cups total.
-
Step 2Combine dry ingredients. In your stand mixer bowl, add 2 cups of flour, salt, and sugar. Attach the paddle attachment and mix briefly to combine.
-
Step 3Add liquids. With the mixer on slow speed, pour in egg/water mixture, melted lard (or oil), and mix until combined.
-
Step 4Add remaining flour. Switch to the dough hook. Gradually add 3-4 cups of flour, about 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. NOTE: Dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky. Add flour gradually to avoid making it too dense.
-
Step 5Knead (in mixer). Let the dough hook knead on low speed for about 6-8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
-
Step 6First rise. Transfer dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
-
Step 7Shape. Punch down dough and shape into rolls (2 - 9" pans).
-
Step 8Second rise. Place in greased pans, cover, and let rise again until puffy (30-45 minutes).
-
Step 9Bake at 350 degrees F. Rolls: 20-25 minutes Loaves: 30-35 minutes
