best corn bread dressing

I have made this recipe for over 20 years and still is my comfort fav. for Thanksgiving.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 - egg slightly beaten
  • 2 cups white corn meal
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups cold milk
  • 1 package roll sage jimmy dean sausage
  • 1 - large bell pepper, diced
  • 1 - large onion, diced
  • 1 can 15 oz chic broth
  • 1 pinch cajun poultry seasoning
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter

How To Make best corn bread dressing

  • Step 1
    (PRE-HEAT OVEN @450) Mix first 6 ingredients til moistened, pour into greased 9x13 baking pan. BAKE for 20-25 minutes. LET SET OVER NIGHT COVERED LIGHTLY W/ TEA TOWEL.
  • Step 2
    (NEXT DAY) saute veggies in 2 tbsp butter til soft add seasonings & salt & pepper to taste.
  • Step 3
    remove veggies from pan & set aside Brown sausage til done, add veggies.
  • Step 4
    crumble corn bread til sum med. chunks are left and fine crumbles.
  • Step 5
    WITH HANDS fold in meat & veggie mix
  • Step 6
    add enough Chicken Broth to moisten, but not soggy.
  • Step 7
    Grease 9x13 pan & put in dressing. Drizzle remaining 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Step 8
    Bake @ 350 til crumbs are golden brown. Serve w/ Turkey, Pork, or Chicken
  • Step 9
    Can be made vegetarian style w/ meatless adaptions
