Ingredients

  • 2 pkg
    yeast
  • 1 c
    water, warm
  • 1 tsp
    sugar
  • 4 c
    milk
  • 3/4 c
    shortening (lard or oil)
  • 1 1/2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 4 c
    whole wheat flour
  • 2
    eggs, beaten
  • 2 tsp
    salt

How to Make Whole Wheat Bread

Step-by-Step

  1. Soak yeast in warm water with sugar.
  2. Heat milk. While hot, pour over shortening, brown sugar, and whole wheat flour. Let stand until lukewarm.
  3. Add 2 beaten eggs, and 2 tsp. salt. Then the yeast mixture.
  4. Gradually add 8-10 cups white flour. Knead well. Let rise until double in bulk. Punch down and let rise again.
  5. Put into 4 well greased bread tins. Let rise until just above rim of pans.
  6. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Grease tops with butter while still hot.
