Living on the coast of North Carolina, we love Calabash-style seafood and hush puppies. I serve these hush puppies hot with homemade honey butter and fresh local fish fried up crispy and golden, MMMM MMMMM! I hope y'all enjoy these wonderful hush puppies as much as we do!
Blue Ribbon Recipe
This is a heavenly basic hush puppy recipe. Made with simple ingredients, you taste the sweet goodness of the cornbread. Bits of onion add a little pop of flavor. Just imagine these golden, delicious fried Southern-style hush puppy balls of goodness served alongside your favorite fried fish or shrimp. They're so tasty you could eat them alone, too.

Ingredients

3/4 cself-rising flour
-
1 cself-rising corn meal (not mix)

1 largeegg, lightly beaten

1 smallonion, finely minced (I use sweet onion)

1 pinchgarlic powder
-
1 pinchonion powder
-
1 pinchOld Bay seasoning
-
1 Tbspsugar
-
3/4 to 1 cbuttermilk
-
·canola oil for frying
How to Make Southern-Style Hush Puppies
- In a large mixing bowl, mix together flour and cornmeal. Add egg, onion, sugar, and spices.
- Add buttermilk and stir with a fork just until blended. The mixture should be fairly stiff. Add a little bit more buttermilk, if necessary.
- Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees.
- Drop dough by teaspoons into hot oil.
- Fy until hush puppies rise to the top and are golden brown.
- Remove from the fryer and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot with honey butter, if desired. Enjoy delicious Southern-style hush puppies!
