This is a great recipe to use your sourdough starter to make delicious, fresh hamburger buns.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup active sourdough discard
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 egg, whipped with a little water for wash
  • sesame seeds (optional)

How To Make sourdough discard hamburger buns

  • Step 1
    Warm the milk to 110 degrees. Add the sugar and yeast. Let sit for about 10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • Step 2
    In a stand mixer fitted with a hook, mix the sourdough discard with the yeast mixture. Stir in the butter, salt, and egg.
  • Step 3
    Gradually add the flour and mix until the dough is soft and elastic. Continue to knead with the mixer or by hand for 10 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Place in a bowl oiled with a little olive oil. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let sit for 2 hours until the dough has doubled in size.
  • Step 5
    Punch down the dough and break it into 8 pieces. Shape into a round bun.
  • Step 6
    Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let rest for 30 more minutes.
  • Step 7
    Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Step 8
    Bake at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes. Cool and cut in half.
