flour, sifted
2 tsp
baking soda
1 1/2 tsp
salt
3/4 c
brown sugar
1/4 c
molasses
2
eggs
2 c
whole wheat flour
1/3 c
shortening
2 c
buttermilk or sour milk
3/4 c
raisins (optional)

How to Make Sandy's Boston Brown Bread

Step-by-Step

  • 1Sift together white flour, soda, and salt.
  • 2Add whole wheat flour (do not sift).
  • 3Add brown sugar.
  • 4Add shortening. Cut in with pastry blender until mixture resembles course meal.
  • 5In another bowl, beat eggs. Add molasses and milk to beaten eggs.
  • 6Add wet mixture to the dry mixture. Add raisins - optional. Mix until all flour is dampened.
  • 7Turn into greased loaf pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for about 1 hour.
