My mother is part Portuguese. This recipe came from her mother my grandmother. We would make this every year for "Fat Tuesday" as a family until the passing of my mother. Now I make it by myself every year. It always makes me think of her & cry, but I know she is looking down on me & saying "Good job Kit" I plan to pass this recipe down to my kids & hopefully one day my grandkids...

Ingredients

  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup water, warm
  • 12 - eggs, beaten
  • 12 cups all purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 cups evaporated milk
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • - vegetable oil, for deep frying

How To Make nessa's malasadas...

  • Step 1
    In small bowl dissolve the yeast with 1 teaspoon sugar in the warm water. In a large bowl pour the flour into it. Make a well in the center of the flour. Then mix the eggs & yeast with the remaining ingredients. Pour it into the flour & mix thoroughly to form soft smooth dough.
  • Step 2
    Then cover the bowl with a clean towel & let rise until it has doubled in size. With a circular motion from the outer edges of the bowl, turn the dough & let rise again until it has doubled in size once more.
  • Step 3
    In a heavy large pot heat the oil to 375F. Spoon about teaspoons of the dough. Then carefully drop then into the hot oil & fry until golden brown. Drain off oil on a paper towel & then roll in a pan or plate of sugar or a mix of sugar cinnamon & serve hot.
