Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp
    granulated sugar
  • 3/4 c
    raisins
  • 1 Tbsp
    caraway seeds
  • 1 Tbsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 3 Tbsp
    butter, melted
  • 1
    egg

How to Make Irish Soda Bread

Step-by-Step

  1. In large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, raisins and caraway seeds, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  2. In separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, butter and egg; pour over dry ingredients and stir just until moistened.
  3. Turn out dough onto lightly floured surface; knead lightly just until dough holds together.
  4. Place on greased baking sheet; flatten into 9-inch round. With sharp knife, score top into eights. Bake in 375 degree F oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until cake tester or wooden pick inserted in centre comes out clean. Let pan cool on rack for 5 minutes before serving.
