Good easy bread that is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. You don't have to have a cast iron skillet. You could use a sprayed baking sheet.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon each baking soda and salt
  • 1 stick cold butter cut into slices
  • 1 cup raisins

How To Make irish soda bread

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven 400 degrees. Place a 12 inch cast iron skillet on the second rack of oven.
  • Step 2
    Whisk the buttermilk and egg together. Set aside. Mix the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt together. Using a pastry cutter or fork add the cold butter and work the dough into course crumbs. Add the raisins.
  • Step 3
    Fold the buttermilk mixture into the dough. Mix well then knead for about 30 seconds. Roll into a large ball. Add the dough to the cast iron skillet. Cut an X in the top of bread
  • Step 4
    Bake for about 45 minutes.
