Homemade Bacon-Onion Croutons

Homemade croutons taste so much better than store-bought and are super simple. They are crispy but melt in your mouth.

You can vary the seasoning ingredients to your liking. Sometimes I add a crushed garlic clove (instead of garlic powder) to the oils to get a deeper garlicky flavor.

Store croutons in an airtight container in a cool place or freeze them.

  • 5 slice
    firm white bread (or french bread)
  • 2 Tbsp
    bacon drippings
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp
    onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    garlic powder, optional

How to Make Homemade Bacon-Onion Croutons


  1. Cut crusts from bread.
  2. Dice bread into 1/2-inch cubes.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the bacon drippings with onion powder and garlic powder.
  4. Add bread cubes; stir until well coated.
  5. Transfer bread cubes to a rimmed baking sheet and spread in a single layer.
  6. Bake in a 300F oven until lightly browned and crisp (25 to 30 minutes). Cool.
  7. Makes about two cups.
  8. Note:
    I start checking after about 17 minutes so that the croutons don't turn too dark.
