Mrs. Lowery always used buttermilk to make her cornbread. I loved it, but mine has never turned out quite like hers.

Ingredients
- 1 cup plain corn meal
- 1/3 cup plain flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 - egg
- 1 cup buttermilk
How To Make buttermilk cornbread

Step 1Preheat oven at 400 degrees.

Step 2Prepare cast iron skillet with small amount bacon grease (or cooking oil) in the bottom. Place skillet in oven while you are mixing cornbread.

Step 3Combine all dry ingredients in mixing bowl.

Step 4Add buttermilk and egg.

Step 5Stir with fork until just blended.

Step 6Pour batter in the hot skillet. Bake about 20 minutes or until the top of the cornbread is golden brown.
