Mrs. Lowery always used buttermilk to make her cornbread. I loved it, but mine has never turned out quite like hers.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain corn meal
  • 1/3 cup plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk

How To Make buttermilk cornbread

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven at 400 degrees.
  • Step 2
    Prepare cast iron skillet with small amount bacon grease (or cooking oil) in the bottom. Place skillet in oven while you are mixing cornbread.
  • Step 3
    Combine all dry ingredients in mixing bowl.
  • Step 4
    Add buttermilk and egg.
  • Step 5
    Stir with fork until just blended.
  • Step 6
    Pour batter in the hot skillet. Bake about 20 minutes or until the top of the cornbread is golden brown.
