The love of my life bought me a bread machine several years ago since I love to bake. I needed a loaf of french bread and thought I would play around with a recipe to see what I come up with. The recipe is a hit with my boyfriend and his father. They like it better than the store bought french bread.

Ingredients

  • BREAD DOUGH
  • 1 1/2 cups water, warm
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons butter flavor shortening
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • TOPPING
  • 1 - egg white
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons cornmeal

How To Make bread machine french bread

  • Step 1
    Place all bread dough ingredients in bread machine and select dough cycle.
  • Step 2
    When cycle is complete, remove dough and roll into a 12" x 15" rectangle on a lightly floured board. Roll up from long side and pinch seam to seal. Fold ends under. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet that has been dusted with the cornmeal. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise 45 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Make 4 diagonal cuts with a sharp knife across top of bread. Bake 375 degrees for 25 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Beat egg white, water garlic powder and italian seasonings, remove bread from oven and brush with egg wash. Return to oven and bake an additional 5 minutes.
