Adapted from my mother-in-law's challah recipe.

  • 1 1/4 c
    warm water
  • 5 large
    egg yolks
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/3 c
  • 4 1/4 c
    bread flour
  • 1/2 c
  • 1 Tbsp
    active dry yeast for bread machine
  • 1 c
    raisins or chopped apricots
  • 1 large
    egg, slightly beaten
  • 2 Tbsp
    poppy seeds or sesame seeds for top of loaf

How to Make Bread Machine Challah


  1. Follow directions for making dough in your bread machine. Using first 7 ingredients layer them in bread machine pan. Turn on machine. Add raisins or apricots when dough begins to form.
  2. When dough cycle is complete remove dough from machine. Divide in 2 halves. From each half form 3 ropes. Braid 3 ropes into a loaf. Repeat with second 3 ropes. Place loaves on greased cookie sheet. Cover. Let dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
  3. Brush the challah with the beaten egg.
    Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or a combination of both. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
