5 Pat Toast

This is a recipe for oven toast that my mother-in- law made for her 5 children when they were small. My husband has very fond memories of having this for breakfast and said that "Mama would use up a whole loaf of bread at one time." However, his sister does not share his sentiment. He recently shared this recipe for a family cookbook. She said, "Thanks, for letting everybody know that we were so poor that we couldn't afford a toaster." I make this now and it's not because I don't own a toaster. LOL

How to Make 5 Pat Toast

Step-by-Step

  1. Set broiler on HIGH
  2. Cut each tablespoon of margarine into 6 equal pieces. Note: Make 3 vertical slices and then one horizontally in the middle to get 6 pieces) Repeat with each tablespoon of margarine-you should have 30 small pieces.
  3. Place one piece of margarine in each corner and one in the middle of each slice of bread. Place on cookie sheet.
  4. Put in oven and broil for approximately 2-3 minutes or until margarine/butter is melted and bread is nicely browned. WATCH VERY CLOSELY because this can burn quickly-ovens temperatures can vary. I HIGHLY Recommend checking after one minute and 30 seconds to one minute intervals until done thereafter.
Note: Add shredded cheese to make cheese toast or cinnamon/sugar mixture to make cinnamon toast.
