My grandmother Wright wrote out this recipe from her mother and passed it on to my mother. My Mum made these moist little muffins frequently. The recipe is very good for making those little bite-size muffins.

Makes 10-12 standard size muffins or approx. 18-20 mini muffins.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 cup oat bran
- 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup sour milk
- 1 - egg, well beaten
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
- 1/2 cup walnuts (optional)
- 1/2 cup chopped dates (optional)
How To Make bran gems

Step 1Mix all dry ingredients together - except the baking soda - in a large bowl.

Step 2Dissolve the soda in sour milk. (Sour the milk with 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar.)

Step 3Add milk and beaten egg to the flour mixture and combine gently.

Step 4Mix in raisins and nuts, if desired, or add 1/2 cup chopped dates.

Step 5Fill greased muffin tin cups two-thirds full or use paper liners.

Step 6Bake in pre-heated 425 F. degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes. If using the mini-muffin tin, check for doneness after 7-8 minutes.
