I love tacos and tortillas that are really good. I decided it had to be easier and cheaper to make them myself so I gave it a try! WAS EASY and everyone loved them!

prep time 1 Hr 15 Min
cook time 5 Min
method Griddle
yield makes 9 tortillas

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 2/3 cup hot water

How To Make homemade flour tortillas

  • Step 1
Mix flour (I used all purpose wheat flour -it's what I had on hand), salt, and baking powder together with a wire whisk. Add the shortening and cut into flour with a fork until mixed; this will have small crumb-like lumps, this is fine.
  • Step 2
Pour the hot water into the flour mixture and mix until a dough forms trying incorporate all the flour until a ball forms. Some flour may be left in bottom of bowl this is fine as long as the ball is not too sticky. Mine worked just fine w/out having to add more flour. I kneaded maybe two times and rolled into a ball and covered with a towel and placed in a warm place for one hour. This dough does not rise like yeast bread so don't expect a double in size with the bread when you go back to get it!
  • Step 3
Then I sprinkled flour over my counter and my rolling pin. I separated the dough ball into nine separate balls (this is how many MINE made but I am sure this being my 1st time I will get better and make more but they turned out great to us so I may double the recipe so I can make MORE!). Now I did not separate all the balls at once. I did one ball at a time and rolled between my palms making it smooth sprinkling with a tad of flour so I could roll it out. I rolled until it felt and looked tortilla size - this was EASY! Worked great making sure I sprinkled flour on the rolling pin here and there so it didn't stick.
  • Step 4
I took the rolled tortilla and placed on a gridde that was at 325° and cooked on one side a couple minutes until it formed small brown spots on that side and felt firmer then I would turn and do likewise with the second side! I placed the cooked tortilla on a towell and covered waiting for all to get done. THEY WERE AWESOME!
  • Step 5
I filled the taco shells with cheese then placed hamburger meat I cooked with my homemade taco seasoning over the cheese which melted the cheese, then added sour cream, folded the taco shell over and ate with a jalapeno pepper! DELISH! *I was out of lettuce n tomatoes*
