Recipe is from a member of my freshman Speech class who used the recipe for her "demonstration" speech.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 - egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • - cinnamon sugar (optional)

How To Make irish soda bread

  • Step 1
    Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly.
  • Step 2
    Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.
  • Step 3
    Combine buttermilk and egg. Add to the crumb mixture.
  • Step 4
    Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently 5 to 6 times.
  • Step 5
    Divide dough in half, shape into 2 balls and pat each into a 6" round loaf. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Step 6
    Using a sharp knife, cut a 4" cross about 1/4" deep on top of each loaf.
  • Step 7
    Brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, if desired.
  • Step 8
    Bake at 375 for 40 - 45 minutes or until loaves are golden brown.
