  • 4 c
    flour
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 6 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 1/2 c
    raisins
  • 1 Tbsp
    caraway seeds
  • 1 1/4 c
    buttermilk
  • 1
    egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter, melted
  • ·
    cinnamon sugar (optional)

How to Make Irish Soda Bread

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly.
  2. Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.
  3. Combine buttermilk and egg. Add to the crumb mixture.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently 5 to 6 times.
  5. Divide dough in half, shape into 2 balls and pat each into a 6" round loaf. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  6. Using a sharp knife, cut a 4" cross about 1/4" deep on top of each loaf.
  7. Brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, if desired.
  8. Bake at 375 for 40 - 45 minutes or until loaves are golden brown.
