Ingredients
- 4 cups flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons shortening
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
- 1 - egg, lightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- - cinnamon sugar (optional)
How To Make irish soda bread

Step 1Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly.

Step 2Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.

Step 3Combine buttermilk and egg. Add to the crumb mixture.

Step 4Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently 5 to 6 times.

Step 5Divide dough in half, shape into 2 balls and pat each into a 6" round loaf. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet.

Step 6Using a sharp knife, cut a 4" cross about 1/4" deep on top of each loaf.

Step 7Brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, if desired.

Step 8Bake at 375 for 40 - 45 minutes or until loaves are golden brown.
