Always remember my Mom making this for us at Christmas. I could see on the counter the dates in hot water and my Mom adding the butter to them then waiting for them to cool down, to mix in with the bread mixture. Funny how we keep these memories.

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 1/2 cups of boiling water
  • 1 cup dates, chopped

How To Make date nut bread my mom's

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 Degrees F. Chop dates and put in bowl with the boiled water to soften for 15 minutes add the butter into the hot liquid.
  • Step 2
    Beat egg add sugar then add the dates with the water and butter in when cooled enough and the dates are softened.
  • Step 3
    Sift and mix the dry ingredients into this and add the vanilla and walnuts Pour in one 9x5 inch bread pan or two 8x5 inch pans: Bake @ 350 degrees F. for 1 hour check with toothpick in center.
