Ingredients

1 c
buttermilk
1/2 tsp
baking soda
1/2 tsp
salt
1 c
yellow corn meal
2 Tbsp
butter, melted
1
egg, well beaten
1 Tbsp
shortening

How to Make Cornbread

Step-by-Step

  • 1Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • 2Place shortening in a small cast iron skillet. Place it in the warm oven and heat until shortening is hot.
  • 3While it is heating, put the soda in the milk and stir.
  • 4Put corn meal, salt, egg and butter in a bowl. Add the milk mixture. Stir well.
  • 5Remove skillet from oven. Carefully pour batter into the skillet.
  • 6Bake for 15 minutes or until done.
