"cherry picked" saucy meatballs

Meatballs are great for a group. All you have to do is provide meatballs and toothpicks! I was tired of my usual meatball party fare so I tried these. Success! Glazed with a yummy sauce made from cherry pie filling these moist baked bites hide an unexpected crunch!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 6 - 7 slices bread, crusts removed. cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 can )8 ounces) water chestnuts, drained & chopped
  • CHERRY SAUCE:
  • 1 can (21 ounce) cherry pie filling
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup apple juice
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (each) soy sauce & brown sugar

How To Make "cherry picked" saucy meatballs

  • Step 1
    In a bowl, combine milk, bread cubes, soy sauce, onion powder and garlic salt. Crumble beef and sausage over mixture and mix well. Stir in chopped water chestnuts. Shape into 1 inch balls.
  • Step 2
    Line a 15 inch baking pan with aluminum foil; place meatballs in pan. Broil 4-6 inches away from heat for 10 minutes or until meat is no longer pink. Drain well.
  • Step 3
    In a large skillet, combine the sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until sauce has thickened. Add meatballs; cook and stir until heated through. Serve warm.
