Okay, I’m in the Julia Childs school of thought, and it goes something like this: You can never have enough butter and cream. I’m not sure if she really said that, but many of her recipes emulate that philosophy.
With that said, I do have some recipes that are tasty; plus they are relatively low in fat and calories. And this just happens to be one of them.
Tasty bits of apple and pork, nestled inside a wonton wrapper, and baked not fried.

And with all great taste, you don't have to tell your guests that they're low fat.

So you ready…

  • 24
    wonton wrappers
  • 1 medium
    egg, beaten

  • 2 tsp
    extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium
    scallion, chopped, about 1 ounce
  • 7 oz
    lean ground pork
  • 1 medium
    granny smith apple, grated
  • 1 Tbsp
    currants, raisins, or dried cranberries
  • 1 Tbsp
    plum sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    oyster sauce

  • 2 oz
    tamari, or light soy sauce
  • 2 oz
    rice vinegar, unflavored
  • ·
    a drop or two of sesame oil, hot sesame oil, if you're feeling lucky

How to Make Awesome Low Fat Baked Pork & Apple Wontons


  1. Combine the ingredients for the dipping sauce in a small bowl, and set aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a sauté pan over medium heat.
  3. Add the scallion, and cook until softened, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Add the pork, and continue to cook for an additional 2 or 3 minutes.
  5. Add the grated apple, and continue to cook until all the meat is browned, about 3 or 4 minutes.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat, and then incorporate the plum and oyster sauces, and the currents (raisins, dried cranberries). Allow the sauce to cool slightly before proceeding.
  7. Chef’s Note: What are currants? Currants are dried, dark red, seedless grapes. They are dried to produce a black, tiny shrivelled, flavor-packed bit. Currants are known as Zante currants in the States.
  8. Lay a wonton wrapper on a clean dry surface, and then add about 1/2 tablespoon of the mixture to the center of the wrapper, and brush the edges lightly with egg.
  9. Chef’s Note: There are about as many way to fold a wonton wrapper, as there are stars in the sky. The easiest way would be to fold the bottom half over the top to create a triangle, and then bring in the side corners, as if they are two arms hugging.
  10. Place a rack in the middle position, and preheat the oven to 375f (190c).
  11. Place wontons on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Serve immediately with the dipping sauce, if using.
  13. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
