My grandfather fought in WWI with the British Army. As a result my late mother taught me the following recipe for a simple soldier's donut which I am sure she learned from her father who spent most of 4 years in Europe somewhere.
Using bacon fat, fry up two pieces of white bread on both sides, fill with raspberry jam and eat warm like a sandwich. I just made one using margarine rather than bacon fat for breakfast with a couple of fried eggs and it certainly was a nice treat.
