The Just A Pinch Test Kitchen shows how to make a homemade pie shell and lattice top.
Step 1. Gather your ingredients: 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of vegetable shortening, 1 cup of cold water and 1 tsp of salt.
Step 2. Blend flour, shortening and salt together with a pastry blender until crumbly.
Step 3. Add 1/2 cup cold water to mixture and mix. Then add 1 tbsp of water at a time until pastry dough holds together.
Step 4. Lightly flour a clean work surface. Form dough into two balls.
Step 5. Roll out first ball of dough so it's larger than your pie plate. Transfer to pie plate. Trim excess dough from edges.
Step 6. Roll out second ball of dough. Use a pizza cutter to slice strips.
Step 7. Lay strips across pie spacing them evenly.
Step 8. Weave remaining strips of dough over and under first strips.
Step 9. Push strips to attach to bottom crust.
Step 10. Trim excess off with a small knife.
Step 11. Pinch to raise from rim.
Step 12. Use pastry brush to brush pie with butter mixed with a little bit of water.
