I remember asking Nannie to jot down her favorite pound cake recipe she had just made. She obliged, and to this day, I always use Nannie's recipe because it is a plain and simple butter cake which is just the right size for a small family. She titled the recipe, Plain Loaf Cake, and I still have the scribbled out recipe...
Cream butter together with sugar till light and fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time and mix well on each addition.
Add vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, sift flour together with salt and baking powder. Add these dry ingredients to the butter/egg mixture alternately with the milk.
Butter and flour a 9x5x2 1/2 inch loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees F for about 1 hour or until a knife inserted comes out clean. To check your loaf pan size, measure inside side to side. Serve with whipped cream or plain as Nannie did.
