This delicious cross between brownies and chocolate cake was served at a company potluck, and was unsurprisingly completely devoured. I begged for the recipe, which is faithfully reproduced here. Enjoy this obscure but delightful southern secret!

Ingredients For mississippi mud cake

1 cshortening

2 csugar
-
4eggs, beaten

1 1/2 cplain flour

1/3 ccocoa

1 1/4 tspsalt

3 tspvanilla

1 cwalnuts, chopped

1 sm bagmini marshmallows
- ICING

1 1/2 stickbutter
-
1/3 ccocoa
-
1 box10x powdered sugar
-
1 tspvanilla

1 cwalnuts, chopped

1/2 cevaporated milk
How To Make mississippi mud cake

1Preheat oven to 300°, and grease 9x12 inch pan.

2Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs.

3Sift flour, cocoa, and salt.

4Add flour mixture to shortening, then add walnuts, mix well.

5Pour mixture into pan, and bake for 35 min.

6Icing: Use double boiler to melt butter and cocoa; add evaporated milk, and powdered sugar.

7Cook icing on medium heat, stirring intermittently until smooth, then turn down to low and let simmer while cake is baking.

8Remove cake from oven, spread marshmallows on top, and bake an additional 20 min.

9Add vanilla to icing, stir until well mixed. Add walnuts and stir until well mixed.

10Put icing on cake immediately upon removal and cover marshmallows completely.
