Spiced Bread and Apple Pudding

"This is another useful way of using up stale bread, especially if you have a few windfall apples around...."

INGREDIENTS
5-6 medium slices wholemeal bread from a small loaf, buttered and with the crusts left on
2 medium cooking apples
1 oz (25 g) currants
1 teaspoon mixed spice
2 oz (50 g) Demerara sugar
Freshly grated nutmeg
2 eggs
½ pint (275 ml) milk
A little butter
