Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

1 cup vegetable or canola oil

1/2 cup applesauce
1/4 cup molasses
4 large eggs, at room temperature 
1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 
8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature (use brick style, do not use anything labeled lite, lowfat, or spreadable)
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted (do not skip sifting)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract 
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
