My mom used to make this soup all the time until she had her stroke, and I'm glad I watched her because now she asks me to make it for her:) (Oh, and this also can be made in the crock pot)

prep time 30 Min
cook time 1 Hr
method ---
yield 4-6 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds yukon gold potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon pepper
  • 3 medium ham steaks, cubed
  • 1 lg. can chicken broth
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 or 3 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil (give or take a little)
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 4-6 cups water

How To Make the best ham and potato soup

  • Step 1
On med-high in a large pot heat olive oil, butter and ALL seasonings, until butter is bubbly. Then add onion and saute until translucient.
  • Step 2
Add flour and mix to make a kind of pastey substance. Now slowly add milk while whisking it all together, until there is no lumps.
  • Step 3
Add in water, broth, potatoes and ham. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to med, stirring it occasionally. When potatoes are tender then it's time to serve:)
  • Step 4
SOME SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Add a tablespoon of sour cream on top, with some shredded cheese and chives!! YUMMY!! I hope you all enjoy!
