split pea soup

my family loves it when i make them split pea soup. it is a favorite during the winter months.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups water
  • 2.5 cups dried split peas
  • 1 - medium onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 - carrots, chopped
  • 2 - stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 1 pound boneless smoked ham

How To Make split pea soup

  • Step 1
    Heat water and peas to boiling.
  • Step 2
    Boil for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and cover.
  • Step 3
    Let sit for 1 hour.
  • Step 4
    Add ham (whole), onion, salt and pepper.
  • Step 5
    Cover and simmer until peas are tender, about 1 hour.
  • Step 6
    Remove ham and cut ham to 1/2 inch pieces.
  • Step 7
    Stir ham, carrots, and celery into soup.
  • Step 8
    Cover and simmer until veggies are tender, about 45 minutes.
