My sister's friend's mother lived in New Orleans. She agreed to meet us and give us a personal tour of New Orleans right after she got off the local PBS station where she was making this soup as part of a fund raiser. It is as warm and delightful as her Southern Hospitality.

Ingredients For tina's cream of mirliton and shrimp soup

  • 3 lb
    mirliton
  • 1
    medium onion minced
  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 1/4 tsp
    cayenne pepper
  • 4 clove
    garlic divided
  • 1 lb
    small shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1 1/2 c
    half & half
  • salt and pepper

How To Make tina's cream of mirliton and shrimp soup

    Steam mirliton until tender, peel and scrape flesh off pit. Puree until smooth. Reserve

    Sauté onion in butter until translucent. Add 3 cloves of minced garlic. Sauté a few more minutes
  • 3
    Add shrimp to onion, sauté 3 minutes. Add 1 minced garlic clove and sauté 1 minute. Add mirliton and Half & Half. Adjust seasonings. Heat until hot. Garnish with minced chives if desired.
