January 6, 2012 started out cold with snow flurries early, then it became sunny and it was mild and beautiful in the forties. I was hungry for a good homemade soup, had a large ham bone in the freezer, and we love pea soup,so I bought dried split green peas.
There is a recipe for this on any package of dried split peas, and I planned to use the one which I purchased with an exception:I didn't use the seasoning packet it suggested by Goya,as it contained monosodium glutamate.
After reading that I chose to use my own seasonings.

This was steaming hot and enough with a slice of hearty bread.

How to Make SPLIT PEA SOUP WITH HAM

Step-by-Step

  1. In a saucepan with a cover, boil the first 6 cups of water and stir in the dried peas. Boil a couple of minutes, stir, and then shut off the heat and cover it. Leave for an hour, to soften the peas. Strain and rinse with fresh water.
  2. Meanwhile, place the ham bone in a large 6-8 qt. kettle and add 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, add the garlic, onion, carrots and bouillion, and the cumin and turmeric. Cook stirring occasionally, turn down the heat.
  3. After removing the ham bone and after rinsing the peas add to the large pot, along with the chopped ham. Cover and simmer for about an hour, until peas are soft and season with pepper if desired. It makes a fine lunch or light supper on a cold day.
