Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 pound smoked ham shanks or ham hocks
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 pound dry split peas, rinsed
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled & diced (2 cups)
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled & finely chopped
  • 1 - onion, cut in half and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • - garlic powder, to taste
  • - salt & pepper, to taste

How To Make split pea soup (crock pot)

  • Step 1
    Combine all ingredients in a large crock pot. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Step 2
    Cover and cook on low heat setting for 12 hours. An hour before soup is done, remove ham shanks or ham hocks to a chopping board. Discard bones, skin and fat. Shred meat and return to the crock pot.
  • Step 3
    Before serving, mash any remaining potato chunks with a potato masher. Stir and adjust seasonings, to taste.
