Ingredients

1-1/2 lb
smoked ham shanks or ham hocks
8 c
water
1 lb
dry split peas, rinsed
2 medium
potatoes, peeled & diced (2 cups)
2 medium
carrots, peeled & finely chopped
1
onion, cut in half and thinly sliced
1 c
celery, chopped
garlic powder, to taste
salt & pepper, to taste

How to Make Split Pea Soup (Crock Pot)

Step-by-Step

  • 1Combine all ingredients in a large crock pot. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • 2Cover and cook on low heat setting for 12 hours. An hour before soup is done, remove ham shanks or ham hocks to a chopping board. Discard bones, skin and fat. Shred meat and return to the crock pot.
  • 3Before serving, mash any remaining potato chunks with a potato masher. Stir and adjust seasonings, to taste.
