Many years ago, someone in the family collected recipes from descendants of my great grandparents, William M. and Florence E. (Snodgrass) Whaley and had them compiled into a cookbook. I am posting those recipes here so that they will not be lost. This recipe was submitted by my cousin Jeanetta.

Stove Top


  • 2 Tbsp
    butter or margarine
  • 1 medium
    head green cabbage, cut in 8 wedges
  • 4 to 5 small
    potatoes, peeled
  • 1 c
    beef broth
  • t tsp
    honey or sugar
  • dash(es)
  • 1
    bay leaf
  • 12 to 16 oz
    sausage (polish or kielbas, your choice of beef or pork)

How to Make Polish Sausage Stew


  1. In Dutch oven, over medium heat. stir butter and cabbage until wilted.
  2. Add remaining ingredients, except sausage. Stir to combine.
  3. Place sausage, whole, on top and cover.
  4. Stir vegetables occasionally.
  5. Simmer 30 to 45 minutes, until potatoes are done. Serve.
