If you have ever had French onion soup at a restaurant, you know how delicious it is. The hardest part of this recipe is slowly cooking down and caramelizing sliced onions. They're added to a slow cooker with beef broth, sherry, and Worcestershire sauce. In the Crock Pot, the onions soak up the wonderful broth flavor. A toasted slice of French bread with cheese is placed on top when serving. It's almost like a cheesy crouton. With a simple technique and classic flavors, it's a wonderful bowl of French onion soup.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 6 medium sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3 cans beef broth (14 oz each)
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup dry sherry, optional
  • 8 slices French bread, 1 inch thick
  • 8 slices Swiss or Gruyere cheese

How To Make crock pot french onion soup

  • Cook sliced onions and garlic until soft.
    Step 1
    In a large skillet, melt butter. Begin to cook sliced onions and garlic.
  • Stir until cooked.
    Step 2
    Stir often and cook until onions are thoroughly cooked, about 20 minutes.
  • Add to a slow cooker with beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, water, and sherry.
    Step 3
    Transfer the onion mixture to a 5-quart Crock Pot. Add beef broth, Worchestershire sauce, 1 cup water, black pepper, and sherry (if using).
  • Cook on high for 3 hours or low for 6 hours.
    Step 4
    Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours.
  • Cut slices of French bread, top with cheese, and broil until melted and toasted.
    Step 5
    Before serving soup, toast bread slices with a slice of Swiss or Gruyere cheese on top. Broil for 3 minutes or until cheese is light brown and bubbly.
  • Ladle soup into bowls.
